Have The Nets Landed Their Man

According to several sources the Nets have a “tentative agreement” with the Denver Nuggets to acquire Carmelo Anthony. According to multiple reports, the Nets would receive Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Sheldin Williams, Melvin Ely and Ronaldo Balkman in return for Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, Troy Murphy Ben Uzoh and four first round picks. This, of course, is pending a contract extension with the Nets for ‘Melo to sign.

The Nets are trading every asset that they have in this deal except for Brook Lopez. This is far too much to trade for Carmelo, in my opinion. Billups has been rumored to want an extension or a buyout from any team that trades for him. The Nets will not get very much production from Williams, Ely and Balkman.

This trade does not make the Nets a playoff contender this year. They are currently 8.5 games out of the eighth and final playoff spot and would need a collapse from Indiana, Philadelphia or New York in the final twenty plus games. I do believe it will get them to the playoffs next year as the six or seven seed.

Is that really worth trading all your assets for? The only upside to this trade is it would keep New Jersey under the salary cap and in the hunt for Chris Paul or Deron Williams in 2012. Only signing Williams or Paul in the 2012 offseason will make the Nets a top 4 or 5 seed in the Eastern Conference.

I believe the Nets are giving up far too much to land their man. They could easily save their draft picks and rebuild through the draft while staying under the salary cap. These four picks can be had for 3-4 years very cheaply. The Nets were on the right path to rebuild, stockpiling first round draft picks. The Nets may have landed their man, but they should be asking themselves “at what cost?”
